It's Girl Power on the show today with an all female cast touching on subjects as far flung as healthy vision, weight loss, the launch of a new book and NHS privatisation.

Live with me in the studio will be Gay Lee to talk about a forthcoming exhibition entitled 'How come we didn't know?'. Organised by Lambeth Keep Our NHS Public (Lambeth KONP), one of about 30 local groups in England campaigning to keep the NHS public, free at the point of use and for everyone, under the umbrella of national Keep Our NHS Public.

The exhibition will be revealing the many different faces of NHS privatisation in stunning photos and words and will be held at Streatham Library, 63 Streatham High Rd SW16 1PN, from 3rd - 16th Feb.

Gay has been a nurse and midwife for 30 plus years and has been campaigning to improve the NHS for most of that time.

We also have, joining us on the phones Dr Susan Blakeney, Clinical Adviser to the College of Optometrists; Paula Goode a highly skilled life and business coach launching a new book; and multi-award winning weight loss guru, Debbie Holden.

Just before Christmas, Dr Blakeney was on the show to urge caution with fireworks and eye injuries. She's back now to highlight the lesser known risks of cigarette smoking to eye health.

Smokers are up to four times more likely as non-smokers to develop age-related macular degeneration (AMD), and tend to develop it earlier than non-smokers. AMD can lead to blindness and is a major cause of vision loss in the western world. It occurs when the delicate cells of the macula – the small, central part of the retina responsible for our central vision - become damaged and stop working. Smoking can impede the protective effects of antioxidants and reduce macular pigment density which is vital for good sight.

The College of Optometrists is the professional, scientific and examining body for optometry in the UK, working for the public benefit. For more information on this you can visit

Get Healthy with the best health inspired discussions with expert guests and personal live experiences. Exploring life style tips and that can help us look after our most treasured assets: our minds and body.

A primary source of health issues to target comes from National and International Health Observances. These calendar events are days, weeks, or months devoted to promoting particular health concerns. Dedicating time to each of these causes gives individuals, health professionals, teachers, community groups, and others the opportunity to sponsor health promotion events and stimulate awareness of health issues.

You can plan ahead to contact me to be a guest on the show if a health matter dear to your heart is coming up. These two links can be a great help:

Once a fortnight I invite health specialists, both traditional and complimentary, get fit experts, healers, and protectors of our mental health. I also welcome first hand contributions from every day people like you telling the story of our journey to, or away, from good health.
